INTERNET SAFETY

Wiredkids.org
Wiredkids.org and its affiliated sites for teens and adults educates readers about how the internet, email, and IM devices work; its mission is to protect children especially from online abuse and cybercrime.

TV & MOVIE GRAPHIC MATERIAL
Sometimes it's hard to figure out exactly what the PG rating means.

Kids-in-mind.com
What I loved about this site is that it breaks down specifically three categories (Sex/Nudity, Violence/Gore, and Profanity) and gives very detailed descriptions of anything that falls into each of these areas. Armed with information, it is easier for a parent to make a decision whether or not it is the type of movie you want your child to see.

The Parents' Television Council (www.parentstv.org) monitors television shows and movies, and produces "The Best and Worst Network TV Shows of the Week" and "The Top 10 Best & Worst Network Television Shows for Family Viewing." (You can even file an FCC complaint from this site.)

SEX OFFENDER REGISTRIES
No one likes to think about sex offenders living in their neighborhood, but that's exactly what happened right here in utopia, err Norwell, recently when a sex offender returned home after serving his sentence. And it's the second sex offender to move into town within a year! One committed aggravated rape in the 1980s and moved in with his brother after completing his sentence. The other is a convicted pedophile who returned to his parents' home on Forest Street behind the very popular Gaffield Park. Here are two websites to help you keep track of predators in your own neighborhood.

The Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry Board (www.mass.gov/bsorb/community.htm) tells you the number of Level 2 and Level 3 offenders working and living in every Massachusetts town, providing pictures and details for Level 3 Offenders only.

Family Watchdog (www.familywatchdog.us.com) displays a map of an area by zip code and highlights where known predators live, as well as schools and parks in the vicinity.

Details on Level 2 Offenders living and working in your town can be requested in person at the police station.
