Helping Hands

As we are all well aware, the cost of living in this part of the country is very high. Couple that with the additional costs associated with raising children (never mind multiples!) then it's no wonder that there are many families struggling to meet their basic needs (food, heat, healthcare, shelter).

We often don't know who our neighbors in need are, so here are some of the many resources available.

WANT TO DONATE LOCALLY?  Search all South Shore resources at SharingWeb.org

Check below for SMOM-favored places to make donations to local children and families in need:

CAROLINA HILL
728 Main St (Rt 3A), Marshfield
Carolina Hill is a transitional family shelter for homeless women and children. Their services are designed to break the cycle of repeated homelessness experienced by many families. They are always in need of good quality children's clothing, books, toys and personal care items, as well as women's clothing and basic home furnishings (cooking items, linens). Currently they are accepting only NEW  clothing and toys due to lack of storage space. Drop-offs can be made M-F between 9 and 11 a.m. and 1 and 3 p.m. (avoiding meal times). Eliot Binder or his house manager Barbara can be reached at 781-837-1377.

MARY-MARTHA LEARNING CENTER, Main Street, Hingham
A residential educational program for homeless families, primarily women with infants and young children, which provides educational and social services to assist in achieving long-term changes in their lives and in gaining financial independence. Donations of baby and kid-related items can be dropped off by appointment. Call Sharon Brake at 781-749-5441.

MY BROTHER'S KEEPER, Brockton
They do wonderful work all year for families in need. They accept gently used furniture, and will send a truck to pick up your donations. (508-238-7512)

DONATE EYEGLASSES: Bring old eyeglasses to the Optical Center at BJ's Wholesale (Plymouth, Weymouth, or see www.bjs.com for more locations). They make any necessary repairs and then give them to needy people around the world.

ARE YOU IN NEED OF HELP?

A great place to start is MassResources.org, a website that provides detailed information about the many types of assistance available to those in need living in Massachusetts. Select the type of assistance you are seeking from the drop-down menu (healthcare, food, childcare, preschool, fuel, energy, heating system, etc.) and follow the links to learn about the various federal, state, and local programs to help you.

Additional programs are provided by the local Community Action Councils, which include day care, fuel assistance, heating system services, weatherization, information & referral, consumer mediation services, water and sewer assistance, etc.:

From SMOM Stephanie Maggiani:
I recently took the opportunity to visit Boston Medical Center's NICU when I was in town working nearby. It's in a beautiful new building in the "Menino" wing.  The state of the art facility was very busy with five preemies in residence. One of the nurses took time out to speak with me and happily offered to be a liason to our group for future clothing/small equipment donations. They are always in need of preemie and infant wear for their little miracles.  She told me how the nurses often buy a few little things for new babies whose families are in need of help.  We discussed the possibility of using clothing donations to make little "gift bags" for babies. Perhaps our group would like to explore this option in the future. I will be happy to make visits to BMC NICU as my schedule allows (maggjoliat@rcn.com), or you can reach Marsha Adams or the NICU at 617 414-4359 or marsha.Adams@bmc.org.

NEW ENGLAND MULTIPLES FLEA MARKET is a new Yahoo! online discussion group for multiples families across New England, started by the VP of Triplets, Moms, and More, who is a friend of Angela K.. This online flea market helps families like ours exchange or sell child-related items across club lines. Here's how it works:

  • You need a Yahoo ID to join the group.
  • At www.yahoo.com, click on Groups.
  • On the next screen (Find a Group), type in NEMFM
  • On the next screen, click on the NEMFM heading.
  • If you want to join, click on Join This Group
  • All new members will be verified and approved by moderators (volunteer mothers of multiples)

Remember, moms can't use food stamps to buy diapers, wipes, diaper rash ointment, and any
kind of toiletry items, so donations of these items are very much appreciated.
