Bedrest Survival

According to Prevention magazine, studies from Case Western Reserve University of hundreds of pregnant women who were prescribed bed rest found that the average length of confinement was 90.5 days and that women often experienced weight loss, backache, muscle soreness, muscle loss, and depression.

They suggest these five essentials to surviving extended bedrest:

  1. Clarify "bedrest"
"It can range from taking it easy on 'house arrest' to remaining horizontal all day at home or in a hospital. If you can get up and walk around, do so a little bit each day."

  2. Find a support community
Visit www.sidelines.org or the Yahoo Group called 'Bed Rest Book Buddies' (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bedrestbookbuddies)

  3. Be prepared
Read 'Days in Waiting' by Mary Ann McCann to help you deal with the emotional side of bed rest.

  4. Gather essential supplies
Bottled water, heating pad, mini-fridge or cooler, phone, laptop, and toiletries.

  5. Maintain physical care
Maximize blood circulation and muscle tone with massage and doctor-recommended excercises.
